What your body experiences every month from conception to delivery
This month encompasses conception through early implantation. You may not even know you're pregnant yet. Symptoms: mild cramping, light implantation spotting, extreme fatigue, breast tenderness. Most women only notice a missed period. hCG levels are rising, causing early nausea in some.
Morning sickness typically begins. Symptoms intensify as hCG peaks. Common experiences: nausea and vomiting, intense fatigue, frequent urination, heightened sense of smell, food aversions, breast changes, mood swings. Your baby's heartbeat is detectable by ultrasound around week 6.
The final month of the first trimester. The baby is fully formed but very small. Symptoms may begin to ease toward the end of this month for many women. Common experiences: continuing nausea (often improving), bloating, constipation, visible veins, increased vaginal discharge. Risk of miscarriage drops significantly after week 12.
Welcome to the second trimester! Most women feel significantly better. Nausea fades, energy returns. Your bump becomes visible. Common experiences: round ligament pain (sharp twinges in lower abdomen), nasal congestion, skin changes (glow or breakouts), possible first baby flutters (quickening).
The anatomy scan happens this month β an exciting milestone. Most women clearly feel their baby moving. Common experiences: definite fetal movements, heartburn and indigestion beginning, leg cramps, backache, possible Braxton Hicks (mild, irregular tightening). Your bump is obvious to everyone.
Baby is growing rapidly. You may feel movements very strongly. Common experiences: stronger fetal movements, swollen feet and ankles (normal mild swelling), itchy skin as it stretches, possible stretch marks appearing, heartburn worsening, shortness of breath as the uterus rises.
Third trimester begins. Sleep becomes more challenging. Common experiences: insomnia, Braxton Hicks contractions becoming more frequent, shortness of breath, pelvic pressure, frequent urination returns, colostrum may begin leaking from breasts, possible carpal tunnel symptoms.
Baby is gaining weight rapidly. You may feel very large and uncomfortable. Common experiences: intense pelvic pressure, difficulty walking, heartburn at its worst, shortness of breath most pronounced, exhaustion returns, Braxton Hicks contractions more noticeable, difficulty sleeping.
The final stretch! Baby drops into the pelvis (lightening). Breathing may improve but bladder pressure increases. Common experiences: nesting instinct (burst of energy and urge to clean/organize), mucus plug may be lost, increased vaginal discharge, pelvic discomfort and pressure, Braxton Hicks most frequent, cervix begins softening and dilating.
